October 26th 2009

In Episode 11, Matt and Cricket manage to answer four (count ‘em, four!) questions – except that they don’t really know the answer to Paul Roberts’s question about forwarding and delegation.  However, in their own, inimitable style, they answer Yong Tak Ming’s question about forwarding, Samar’s question about how to configure his resolver so that he isn’t forced to type fully qualified domain names all the time, and Dirck Copeland’s questions about the Kaminsky vulnerability.  And if you stay till the bitter end, you’ll learn where Matt and Cricket got their starts in DNS and why Cricket’s never seen a World Series game.

DNS Industry Update From tuscany networks and Key note speaker Cricket Liu

This year our customer event will be held on the morning of 4th November at The Carnarvon Arms, Burghclere, Newbury and we will be welcoming Cricket Liu to the event as our key speaker to give his personal view on the importance of DNSSEC.

Cricket Liu , a world authority on the DNS protocol will talk about the importance of DNSSEC in the networks of tomorrow :

“ The Domain Name System, Internet’s standard naming service, has been tremendously successful at accommodating the exponential growth of the Internet. However it was not designed to operate in an environment as hostile as the Internet of today.  Consequently, DNS lacks critical security features, such as authentication and integrity checking.

That DNS wasn’t designed with security in mind is evident from the maladies that afflict it.  Since 1997, when Eugene Kashpureff capitalized on a weakness in the implementation of the BIND name server to poison the caches of name servers around the Internet, we’ve seen an accelerating cycle:  New vulnerabilities are found, new patches are released.  The Internet community has done a creditable job of addressing each vulnerability, but no one seems capable of slowing the cycle, much less stopping it.

The latest vulnerability, identified last year by Dan Kaminsky, may seem like just the latest development in this ongoing cycle:  yet another vector a hacker could use to poison the caches of name servers on the Internet.  However, it’s different in a very significant way:  There is no patch.

The “Kaminsky vulnerability” is a weakness in the DNS protocol itself.  Luckily, a permanent fix already exists:  the DNS Security Extensions.  “

Cricket Liu will discuss these topics much more in detail and will give his personal view on how important DNSSEC will be in the future, what you can do to protect your network today and what the plans are of the Top Level Domains (TLD) with regards to DNSSE

Bind 9 Vulnerability

CERT VU#725188 BIND 9 vulnerable to DoS via DDNS

August 3rd 2009

Last week, CERT published an advisory regarding a denial-of-service vulnerability that had been discovered in ISC BIND 9. When a specially crafted dynamic update packet is sent to a BIND 9 DNS server it can cause the DNS server process to crash. It is possible that this can be used as part of a denial-of-service attack.

The vulnerability affects any BIND 9 server that is authoritative for at least one master zone. ACL's that are designed to limit which hosts can send dynamic updates apparently have no effect. As a properly configured name server should contain at least one master zone (0.0.127.in-addr.arpa), our advice is to patch all your BIND 9 based name servers. This includes name servers provided by Alcatel-Lucent VitalQIP, n3k runIP and Infoblox.

Since the advisory was published we have been actively working with our suppliers to ensure we have the latest fixes available before making any announcements. All our suppliers have now released fixes to address the vulnerability.

  • More flexible network configuration: any number of logical IP addresses can be configured per interface. Limitations in setting up static routes have been removed.
  • Network teaming: Network Interface Cards may now be teamed for additional resilience.
  • Improved remote management: runIP Appliances can now be re-initialized remotely without any on-site staff required and without the need to configure the remote management card.
  • Monitoring enhancements: runIPT version 2.3 offers additional monitoring tests and introduces monitoring of the central management stations.
  • SQUID HTTP Proxy support: In addition to DNS & DHCP, customers can now run HTTP proxy services on runIPT appliances.

About runIPT

The runIPT Managed Appliance Solution supplements VitalQIP® investments by addressing the need for an efficient solution for configuring, deploying, updating and patching the DNS and DHCP servers. It eliminates the manual effort normally needed to achieve these tasks and the overhead frequently encountered in coordinating disparate groups such as configuration management, change control, server and security management. runIP brings the same high levels of efficiency to managing the VitalQIP remote servers and server software as Alcatel-Lucent's VitalQIP® brings to managing the IP assets. runIPT is the only appliance solution for VitalQIP® that ships with a remote management card, supports virtual appliances and has integrated application-level monitoring for DNS&DHCP. It remains the only appliance with field hardware support - avoiding the cumbersome advance exchange and hardware return procedures employed by other vendors. As a result runIPT is used by more than 85 fortune 500 companies and has been successfully deployed in more than 50 countries worldwide. runIP is the longest established appliance solution for the VitalQIP environment and continues to deliver leading edge features and capabilities.

Discover Infoblox's PortIQ Appliance

April 20th 2009

SAVES CAPITAL EXPENSES, AIDS TROUBLESHOOTING AND IMPROVES SECURITY

Infoblox Inc. today announced availability of the new Infoblox PortIQT appliance. Available from tuscany networks, PortIQ provides visibility into switch port usage - essential for network capacity planning, security investigations and ease of troubleshooting.

Many enterprises today lack visibility into the utilization of their switch ports, including which are in use, which are available, which devices are connected (or were connected) to each port, and more. This lack of real-time and historical visibility results in unnecessary capital purchases, troubleshooting difficulties, and challenges dealing with security incidents - such as finding and eliminating infected devices on the network.

With the Infoblox PortIQ appliance, network administrators can easily identify the physical port associated with every connected device and get reports on network port utilization. This enables IT departments to get more from their existing assets and make more intelligent switch purchase decisions, saving capital expenses. Additionally, the ability to quickly locate where devices are connected increases security and eases troubleshooting efforts, saving operational costs.
